“We Are Living in Survival Mode”: Lived Experiences of Syrian Refugees and Forcibly Displaced Ukrainians in Northern Ontario

Cet article permet de comprendre les expériences vécues des réfugiés Syriens et Syriennes et les Ukrainiens et Ukrainiennes déplacés de force qui vivent à Sault Ste. Marie, une petite ville du nord de l’Ontario, au moyen de récits personnels. Une analyse comparative dévoile des défis d’intégration divers qui se recoupent, avec pour objectif d’élargir les connaissances universitaires et politiques sur l’intégration des personnes réfugiées dans de petites villes du nord de l’Ontario. Les résultats soulignent que les deux groupes ont été confrontés à des défis similaires, notamment un accès limité à l’emploi, la discrimination, les barrières linguistiques et des soins de santé inadéquats. En dépit de ces obstacles, les participants et participantes accordaient de l’importance à l’accès à des logements abordables, à la nature et à une communauté accueillante. Le manque d’opportunités d’emploi est resté un obstacle majeur à la rétention.
