In July 1994, the Kivu region in eastern Zaire welcomed over a million Rwandan refugees. The region is mountainous and has a very fragile ecosystem. Using secondary sources, this article analyzes the environmental impact of the Rwandan crisis in this part of Zaire. It successively examines the risk of ecological disaster due to excessive deforestation, the possibility of inter-ethnic conflict due firstly to the sharing of available resources, and secondly to competition between the refugees and the indigenous population.
