Providing a brief historical perspective on the evolution of international trafficking in Japan, the article emphasizes the importance of the state in establishing the sex trade as an entrenched social institution. Drawing attention to the crucial influence of American military presence in Japan and other Asian countries, the article hints at the crucial role played by the sex trade in an "orderly and efficient" industrialized nation.Metrics
