Refugees are a hot topic in Africa. Today, there are some 6 million refugees in Africa, including 750,000 in Sudan (World Refugee Survey, 1993), a figure that is largely underestimated since it only takes into account some of the refugees, those who are registered and meet the criteria defined by the Geneva Convention and that of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Not included are those who find refuge 'within their own country: over 5 million Sudanese are "internal refugees". Not included either are those who have crossed a border and moved clandestinely into the rural areas or towns of the host country - often the most numerous.
